Fitter laying reflective ground insulation in a low crawl space of a home in Hoofddorp

Ground insulation Hoofddorp

An insulating layer directly on the base of your crawl space, instead of against the floor. In the low, wet crawl spaces of Hoofddorp and the rest of the Haarlemmermeer that often works better and keeps the cold and the damp from the polder soil out.

Insulation on the polder base, not against the floor

With ground insulation we do not fit the insulation against the underside of the floor, but lay or blow it directly onto the base of the crawl space. Shells, foil or loose fibre then form a continuous blanket across the whole base.

In Hoofddorp and the rest of the Haarlemmermeer that is often the logical choice. The polder is reclaimed land that lies below sea level, and the groundwater sits high. Crawl spaces here are therefore low and clammy. There is then barely any working room to screw boards against the floor, while a layer on the base is possible almost everywhere.

The material goes in through the crawl hatch and it is usually finished within a working day.

Benefits

What ground insulation does in your home

  • Fits in almost any crawl space

Even when there is barely any crawl height, we cover the base with loose material or foil.

  • A crawl space that stays drier

A covered base keeps the damp that rises from the polder soil down below, which counters mould and a musty smell.

  • Warmer floors on the ground floor

The chill from the wet subsoil no longer works its way up into your living room.

  • A lower heating bill

Less warmth sinking away through the floor means the heating can run more calmly.

Which material suits under your home?

From natural shells to reflective ground foil

If you would rather not have plastic under the floor, a layer of shells is a fine choice. It is a fully natural material that holds air and so insulates, while it lets damp evaporate instead of holding on to it. In the damp polder soil that is a benefit, because the crawl space can keep breathing.

If the crawl height is minimal or the base is genuinely wet, we often roll out a reflective ground foil, as in the photo. It seals the damp off from the floor and reflects the warmth back into the home. During the survey we feel and measure how your crawl space is doing and tell you which material suits it best.

Why us

Why ground insulation in Hoofddorp is in good hands with us

No two crawl spaces in the polder are the same. The groundwater level, the crawl height and the condition of the base differ per street and sometimes per home. That is why we look first, and only then choose a material.

  • We go into the crawl space ourselves first

Height, damp patches, pipework and the condition of the base: our fitter assesses it from below before a word is said about material.

  • Material that suits a wet polder base

Shells, foil and fibre all react differently to damp. We choose what suits your crawl space and explain why that is the better choice here.

  • Fitters used to the crawling work

Working on your stomach in a low, clammy space is a craft of its own. Our people do it every day and hand over the base evenly covered, right into the corners.

  • The ISDE grant off your hands

Combined with a second measure, ground insulation usually falls under the national ISDE grant for homeowners. We work out the amount for you and help get the application out the door.

Ground insulation in Hoofddorp and the surrounding polder

Hoofddorp lies on reclaimed land, and you notice that under the floor. The polder lies several metres below NAP and has been kept dry since the days of the Cruquius pumping station. The groundwater sits high, and in Hoofddorp and the lower-lying parts of the polder, such as Rijsenhout, Cruquius and Lisserbroek, the crawl spaces are often low and clammy. It is exactly there that a covered base keeps the cold and the damp from the polder soil out, without anything changing about your floor.

Our working area runs from Hoofddorp to the Ringvaart and the Geniedijk. If the survey shows that floor insulation actually delivers more in your case, we simply say so, even if that is not the job you called about.

Grants and savings

Insulate with help from a grant

Saving on the energy bill with insulation, calculated with the insulation calculator

Insulation brings more comfort and a lower energy bill, and you will often qualify for a grant. How much you save and what you get back depends on your home, the measure and the insulation you already have. We work it out together with you.

Private homeowners in Hoofddorp and the surrounding area can use the national ISDE grant when they take two or more measures. For owners' associations there is the SVVE scheme. The conditions and amounts change from year to year, so we look together at what is possible right now and help you with the application.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about ground insulation

Cannot find your question? Feel free to call or message us, we are always happy to help.

Ground insulation or floor insulation, what is wiser in Hoofddorp?

In the polder crawl spaces are often low and the groundwater sits high, and then ground insulation is usually the more practical choice. If your crawl space happens to be high and dry, floor insulation gets a little more out of it because the insulation sits closer to the floor. During the survey we crawl underneath and tell you which of the two suits your situation best.

Does ground insulation also work if there is water in my crawl space?

A damp base is actually a reason to insulate, as long as we do it properly. Shells and vapour-open foils let the damp evaporate instead of sealing it in. If there is genuine standing water, something that occurs in this polder, we arrange drainage or extra ventilation first before we cover the base.

Which materials do you use on the base?

Depending on your crawl space we work with insulating shells, a reflective or vapour-open ground foil or blown-in fibre. We show you the options and choose together what suits the crawl height and the moisture level.

Do I need to clear out the crawl space first?

Usually not. We work via the crawl hatch and bring our own light and tools. If a lot of belongings or old pipes are in the way, we discuss in advance how best to work around them.

How long does ground insulation last?

A well-fitted layer, certainly of shells, stays in place for decades without you having to do anything to it. The material barely settles and does not need topping up or replacing.

What does ground insulation cost roughly?

That depends on the surface area of the crawl space and the material we choose. Ground insulation is often cheaper than floor insulation, because there is less labour-intensive fitting work involved. After the survey you receive a fixed price, and that survey costs you nothing.

Which places in the Haarlemmermeer do you work in?

We come throughout the municipality, from Hoofddorp and Rijsenhout to Cruquius, Lisserbroek and the villages along the Ringvaart. Do you live just outside that line? A message or call is soon made, and then we will tell you whether we can come round.

Ground insulation for the wet crawl spaces of Hoofddorp and the polder

Hoofddorp and the rest of the Haarlemmermeer lie on reclaimed land, and that has consequences right under your floor. Because the polder lies below sea level and the groundwater keeps sitting high, crawl spaces here are damp more often than average. A covered base is then more effective than insulation against the floor: shells or a vapour-open foil keep the cold out and let the damp evaporate.

Why here it is often the base and not the floor

The crawl spaces under older homes in the polder are regularly so low that there is simply no room to fix boards against the floor. As an insulation company in Hoofddorp we choose per home the material that suits the crawl height and the moisture level, so that the ground floor gets warmer and the space below stays drier.
